Literatura: Manuel Vázquez Montalbán

Manuel Vázquez Montalbán was a highly accomplished writer, journalist, poet and essayist - amongst many other things - who, sadly, died of a heart attack whilst on the way back to Spain from a tour to Australia in 2003.

One of his most magnificent creations was the detective Pepe Carvalho.  Today, we're going to look at a short text on this subject.  First, the comprehension questions:

Montalbán creó una de las series de novela negra más exitosas y prolíficas de la literatura española. Esta serie, protagonizada por el detective Pepe Carvalho, fue un vehículo expresivo del autor para legar una crónica sociopolítica, histórica y cultural de los últimos 40 años.

Así, cada novela está claramente ambientada en el contexto histórico en el que fue escrita. Por ejemplo, en Asesinato en el Comité Central 1981 se consuma el asesinato de un dirigente comunista en plena crisis del eurocomunismo del PCE, mientras que en 1993 serán los fastos de la Barcelona olímpica lo que centre las aventuras del detective en Sabotaje olímpico.

Las novelas sirven al mismo tiempo para dar rienda suelta a la pasión desatada del escritor por la gastronomía. Diferentes personajes, algunos creados ex-profeso como Fuster, sirven al autor de excusa para disertar sobre las virtudes del asado argentino o la contundencia del ajoarriero.
